Íñigo Cuiñas



Biographical sketch

Iñigo Cuiñas was born in Vigo, Spain, in 1971. He received the M.Eng. degree in telecommunication engineering and the Ph.D. degree from the Universidade de Vigo, in 1996 and 2000, respectively.

He is a Professor with the Department of Signal Theory and Communications, Universidade de Vigo. He is currently the Dean of the School of Telecommunication Engineering, where he teaches courses on remote sensing and the social links of engineering.

He has authored or co-authored over 85 papers in journals and 110 contributions to international conferences. His current research interests include radio wave propagation in complex environments, as vegetation media; the environmental aspects of radio frequency systems, as the development of techniques to reduce the electromagnetic pollution; and information security at physical level.

Synergistic activities

Dean of the School of Telecommunication Engineering, since March 2015. The focus of my task is the innovation in education and the generation of conditions for improving the work conditions of Professors, Associate Professors and Researchers in general, in both academic and scientific activities. The integration of students, staff and lecturers in a common path is also a goal.

Vice Dean of the School of Telecommunication Engineering, from April 2009 to March 2015. My actuation was focused in developing the new formative programs adapted to the EHES: the Grado (Bachelor) in Telecommunication Engineering Technologies, which has been implemented in 2010, and the Master in Telecommunication Engineering, implemented in 2014.

Secretary of Dept. Teoría do Sinal e Comunicacións, Universidade de Vigo, from July 2004 to April 2009. Supporting the Head of the Department I took several actions to improve the educational, research and development activities and technology transfer to the industry. As a result, the external funding for R+D activities was increased from 396,000 euro in 2003, 584,000 euro in 2004, and 1,452,000 euro in 2005, which represented a 23% of the R+D external funding of the whole University. We are now at the top of ranking among the 33 Departments of the university. The Department is also at the top of the “scientific production”, measured as number of peer-reviewed publications, number of patents, and books. During this time, two new three year degrees have been implemented and also the Doctoral Program “Teoría de la Señal y comunicaciones” has received a quality award from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education.

In past years, I have participated in R+D projects for Telefónica Móviles, which is the main mobile operator company in Spain and many other countries in South America. In 2000 we got a R+D project about UMTS in a call from this company to all the Technical Universities in Spain. Five projects were funded in this call. This collaboration continues with a second project related to the integration of Zigbee and UMTS, which opened the work of the PhD Thesis of José Antonio Gay-Fernández .

I have been lecturer of the subject “Teledetección” (Remote Sensing); firstly, at five year of Electrical Engineering degree, and now at the fourth year of the Bachelor adapted to EHES. Since 2000, I have taught this topic every year, developing new curricular materials and using a student-closing academic method that results in an increment in students from 12 in 2000 to 113 in 2006.

I taught several times a course on radiofrequency stations measurement and certification, most of them in Vigo, but two times in foreign Universities: in Universidad de la República, Montevideo (Uruguay) and in Universidad de Guadalajara (Mexico). The objective was to explain measurement procedures to assure health limits around radio stations, and to provide knowledge to define normative on the topic. Such an activity represents a service to the engineering community in foreign countries.

I’m also involved in conducting workshops on Design Thinking for university lecturers and also for company professionals. This was a consequence of my participation in several Erasmus+ projects for innovation in education. Now, this activity links to the task as lecturer of a topic on Engineering and Society at Master in Telecommunication Engineering, where soft skills are introduce in the development of engineering projects.
